Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

This film by Tim Burton has some of the most complex design work of McDowell’s cinematic design oeuvre.

Tim Burton’s watercolor paintings of key scenes for the film were each converted into highly stylized environments; a ‘chocolate’ river with a full-scale transparent boat floating between exotic sculpted terrain and trees with a backdrop of a functioning waterfall, and others. An unprecedented multi-disciplinary collaboration through design and production and the parallel development of the complex architecture of the film honed McDowell’s ongoing world building process.
